2023 Brazilian GP: Hamilton’s Best Chance Yet, What Happened at the Mexican GP?
Lewis Hamilton has been on fire lately! He finished second at the United States Grand Prix (later disqualified, of course), and also finished in second at the Mexican Grand Prix. He’s set his sites on that top podium spot in Brazil for sure. And what better place to do just that?
Interlagos is one of his favorite circuits, he’s an honorary citizen of Brazil, and Mercedes are always quick on this track. But with returning champ George Russell on the track, he’s not the only one gazing at that podium.
Though Russel’s down in the standings at No. 8, Hamilton is just 20 points behind Sergio Perez in the standings now — the runner-up spot is within his grasp.
Running down the Mexican GP
The Mexican Grand Prix turned out to be a white-hot thriller. Sergio Perez is under immense pressure, and it’s showing. His home race did not go according to plan at all, and it started with Qualifying.
The Mexican qualified in fifth place, behind Daniel Ricciardo (the Aussie threatening his seat for next season). At the start of the race, Checo decided to give it his all. Unfortunately, though, you don’t win the race at the first corner. Perez made contact with Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari and was sent flying.
His RB19 landed with a massive impact, causing irreparable damage to the floor of the car, which meant that he had to retire from the race. Max Verstappen, meanwhile, had charged past the two Ferraris and into the lead of the race. Eventually, Kevin Magnussen crashed, and authorities brought out the red flag.
This left the grid with an interesting dilemma — use the harder tires to make it to the end of the race, or risk it on the faster medium tire, which might wear out before the end of the race.
Verstappen and the two Ferraris played it safe, but the Mercs and McLarens went for the medium tires. Hamilton used his pace advantage to overtake the Ferraris and finish in second place behind Verstappen. Leclerc brought his Ferrari home in third place. Elsewhere, Lando Norris drove his McLaren from 17th on the grid to finish in 5th — a spectacular performance from the Brit.
Daniel Ricciardo Makes His Claim for 2024 Red Bull Seat
Sergio Perez could not have any worse luck if he tried. In what has to go down as one of the worst race weekends of his career, Daniel Ricciardo puts in arguably one of his best performances.
Ricciardo drives for Alpha Tauri — one of the slowest cars on the grid. He qualified in fourth place, ahead of Sergio Perez in the dominant Red Bull.
In the race, everyone expected Ricciardo to plummet down the field, but he held on to finish in 7th place, bringing home some vital points for Alpha Tauri (their biggest haul of the season). It also puts them in a prime position to win $20 milliion in prize money at the end of the season if they keep their spot in the constructors’ championship!
